What to do if your baby has high jaundice at 14 days

Jaundice is one of the most common diseases in newborns, especially in babies who are born within a week, and are prone to high jaundice. High neonatal jaundice can be both a physiological phenomenon and a major manifestation of a variety of diseases. Therefore, parents should observe carefully, and once abnormal jaundice occurs, they must go back to the hospital for examination, early detection, early diagnosis, and treatment.

Classification of neonatal jaundice: physiological jaundice and pathological jaundice

1. Physiological jaundice

Usually two days after birth, the newborn can be seen with the naked eye that the skin is a little yellow, reaching a peak in 3~5 days, and disappearing in 7~10 days, at this time, the jaundice index (serum bilirubin value) is generally not more than 15mg/dL is within the normal range.

2. Pathological jaundice

Pathologic jaundice is considered in a neonate when one of the following conditions:

(1) Early appearance of jaundice: within 24 hours after birth;

(2) Severe: serum bilirubin concentration in full-term infants > 220mol/L (12.9mg/dl),premature>256.5μmol/L(15mg/dl);

(3) Serum conjugated bilirubin increased >26mol/L (1.5mg/dl);

(4) Rapid progression: serum bilirubin rises > 85mol/L (5mg/dl) per day;

(5) Jaundice lasts for a long time, more than 2~4 weeks, or progressively worsens or regresses.

What to do if your baby has high jaundice

Get plenty of sun:

Newborn babies are prone to jaundice, sometimes elevated before they are discharged from the hospital, and sometimes only a few days after they return home. Therefore, the mother needs to observe carefully, if you find that the baby's face is yellowish, but the symptoms are not too serious, then you can hold the baby out to bask in the sun, in the process of sunburning, let the baby's skin touch the sun as much as possible, and bask in the sun every day can also turn yellow. However, when basking in the sun, you should not bask in the glass, and at the same time, you should pay attention to covering your baby's eyes, so as not to burn your baby's eyes in the scorching sun.

Breastfeeding

Under normal circumstances, stop breastfeeding, and the baby's jaundice symptoms will subside significantly, but breast milk is the most ideal food for small babies, so it is better not to stop casually, and there is no need to take a mixed feeding method of breast milk and formula too early. Unless the serum bilirubin level is too high, it is recommended to stop breastfeeding for three to five days.

Go to the hospital for medical treatment in time.

Physiological jaundice is generally 2-3 days after birth, to about 14 days to retreat, if the baby's jaundice symptoms continue not to subside, and gradually worsen, or suddenly aggravated, and, the baby appears malaise, drowsiness, difficulty sucking, stiffness of limbs or convulsions and other symptoms, then parents should send the baby to the hospital in time, so as not to delay the baby's condition.

Correction of the misconception of high jaundice in babies

Give sugar water to jaundice babies:

Many parents think that giving jaundice babies to sugar water can treat the baby's jaundice symptoms, in fact, this is a misunderstanding, because if the baby is fed too much sugar water, then his digestive tract is full of glucose, which will make the baby have no appetite for milk, and the frequency and amount of milk will be reduced, which will affect the excretion of bilirubin, resulting in aggravation of jaundice symptoms.
