What are the symptoms of pneumonia in adults and what are the treatments?

The main clinical symptoms of pneumonia in adults are cough with or without sputum production and chest pain. The pre-symptoms mainly include rhinitis-like symptoms or symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection, such as nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, dry throat, sore throat, pharyngeal foreign body sensation, hoarseness, headache, dizziness, hot eyes, tearing and mild cough.

Different adults have different symptoms of pneumonia, but only one or more of them. For example, mycoplasma pneumonia, pneumonia caused by mycoplasma, symptoms often manifest as paroxysmal coughing, and severe symptoms are often accompanied by retrosternal pain.Viral and plasma cell pneumonia tends to worsen cough, but chest pain and shortness of breath are usually absent. Older patients with severe pneumonia have less cough and sputum production, and often have no obvious respiratory symptoms. In the early stages of pneumonia in immunocompromised patients, pneumonia may only manifest as increased respiratory rate, fever, restlessness, or no obvious respiratory symptoms.

Treatment of pneumonia is mainly anti-infective therapy, including empiric therapy and antipathogen therapy. In the former, antibiotics are empirically selected based on epidemiological data. In the latter, antibiotics that are susceptible to in vitro testing are selected based on culture results of etiology and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
